Reflections

Advance organizers are a visual way of preparing design students for new knowledge and concepts. Much like a road map, the student can be grounded in the big picture, in this case, core design principles and where color and color associations fit into the overall scheme of things.

As an assignment in
EDTE 281, I created a website intended for beginning graphic design students, adult learners, on color. To scaffold understanding, I created two advanced organizers. One is on basic design principles and the other is on color's place in this scheme.

The purpose of these advance organizers is to stimulate higher-order thinking on color. The advance organizers and the supporting web pages with descriptive information on each color and its associations fill in the cognitive boxes. Students are challenged to find real world examples of these emotional attributes of color, and then they are then asked to come up with new emotional attributes associated with each color with supporting graphics or pictures to demonstrate this.

Peer Feedback

From Mark Reese:
I'm seriously impressed. It is very noticeable that you are a professional at web page design, but beyond that your content is explicit. The learning invoked from your layout is phenomenal. It is obvious where your passion is. I think that if we, your cohorts pay attention, we can learn a great deal from you.

From Troy Baucom:
Very nice site! You have a great eye for style and color. I use color theory for staining and finishing lessons. This site could be a fantastic addition to bringing technology into the shop.

Faculty Feedback

From Joyce Dibble:
Outstanding work on this assignment. I especially love the left side color bar spectrum image because I knew instantly that page was all about color before I read any of the text! All required elements are present and it is good that in the lesson section you mentioned the 'North American' cultural association for the color red as an example that different cultures may associate colors differently.

Your work in the 281 class has been exemplary. Your application of tools and strategies into your workplace is a model for others to emulate. We appreciate your enthusiasm toward teaching and learning. Your willingness to share your expertise with others contributes to the success of the cohort and is greatly appreciated.
