Reflections

Data suggests that humor can have positive impacts on student engagement, learning speed, knowledge retention, problem solving, attitudes toward subject matter, and test scores; while simultaneously reducing stress and anxiety and number of conflicts in the classroom. The importance of Play is also backed up by an abundant amount of research.

This web project is based on the importance of "Play," one of the six senses outlined in "A Whole New Mind" by Daniel Pink. Our group, for our final project in
EDTE 286, chose to create a website that would serve as a gateway, a portal, for educators to learn more about this topic. We cite many sources, provided ample links, and backed up our research with standards, and the site we created has links to all documents and online sources.

Group members:
Tom Cappelletti, Sean Duncan, Elliot Harris, and Rochelle Jacks.

Peer Feedback

From Derek Oliver:
The “Play” project you and your group created is fantastic! The site looks professionally done and the presentation had me in stitches the entire time. The color scheme of the site matches the content- playful and fun. The incorporation of the humorous videos makes the page even more enjoyable. The links to your research are helpful for someone looking to go beyond the content of the site or just see where you got your information. The viewing of your presentation intrigued me so, I went back and read Pink’s chapter on Play. All of the links to quotes, jokes and research make it easy to navigate to more information or just find a quick laugh. This is a great reminder of the things we forget about in education. Excellent work!

Below are comments received from peers during the face-to-face session.

  • GREAT introduction! Fun, got us awake and laughing.
  • Many many resources! Got everyone included and up and moving.
  • Nice job showing the serious side of play and how it can be used in education.
  • Very well organized and inclusive. Incredibly useful webpage full of resources.
  • They did an amazing job of demonstrating play.
  • Making the website a mashup was a clever idea.
