Reflections

Anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) harassment and bullying are endemic problems in American schools. It is often the weapon of choice for bullies, regardless of the bullied student’s sexual orientation. Yet many schools have not effectively addressed anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment.

The fact that much discrimination against LGBT people is intangible or unconscious permits some well-meaning people to dismiss or ignore it. However, there is little doubt that this behavior not only puts LGBT students at a distinct educational disadvantage but also reinforces the feeling that the campus is unsafe.

This webquest was my culminating project for both
EDTE251 and EDTE284. My webquest is intended for 11th & 12th grade high school sociology students, and college students primarily in a lower division curriculum that addresses these issues. The website I created provides ample resources for students, an evaluation rubric, and research links for the teacher.

Peer Feedback

From Pat Crandley:
With this project, not only does Tom showcase his mastery of web design but he clearly organizes, communicates and educates the audience on a complex issue. The reader feels the full impact of this issue through Tom's strong visual style and layout.

This webquest is masterfully constructed and encourages participants to consume, analyze and reflect on the material Tom is presenting. In this webquest, Tom provides a strong framework for understanding the desired student learning outcomes but also encourages students to continue exploring the content with a comprehensive list of external resources. Fantastic work!

From Randall Ulrich:
Nice use of graphics and videos throughout the site.

The choice of colors, graphics, videos, text appeals to all learning styles, while providing appropriate imagery to reinforce the ideas being presented.

The webquest itself was well laid out and easy to follow. Giving a range of options for assignments, and having students complete two choices was a nice touch.

As you mention on the site itself, members of the GLBT community tend to be invisible on a school campus. Nice job bringing this issue to light in a way that the high school audience can relate to. Good work.

Below are comments received from peers during the face-to-face session.
  • Great topic – In that this issue really need addressing.
  • Clear task, product and outcome
  • The connection to schools is clear
  • Excellent design as always
  • Thank you for your efforts to address a serious issue
  • Nice work – Should be used in a real education setting

Faculty Feedback

From Dr. John Cowan:
Tom, this is a very well done WebQuest. I think you nicely capture the spirit of the WebQuest by presenting GLBT issues by providing a provocative intro and following through with strong individual quest elements. As usual your graphic and html work was outstanding. Excellent work on this.

On a more general note, I wanted to say that it has been a pleasure to work with you. You brought with you to the program a great set of skills and, more importantly, a great attitude. I wish you well with the duration of your program experience and beyond. Your peers gave you very high ratings for your quest.
