your group task
create a campus activism campaign

High school and college students across the nation are working for social and political change and forging their own paths towards a more LGBT-welcoming society. The students of this generation have become key members of the LGBT movement by creating change on their campuses and extending that into their communities and on to the entire country. Straight students, known as “Allies” and those still questioning their sexuality but believing in basic freedoms for all and a celebration of diversity, have transformed “LGBT” into LGBTQA groups (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and their Allies), and many campuses are creating GSA student groups (Gay Straight Alliances).

Taking that first step to build an activism group and campaign on your campus can be difficult and full of both uncertainties and obstacles. We will provide your group with specific steps on the
process page and an abundance of background information on the resource page. This will provide you and your group with a variety of tools and strategies to complete this task.

Your group task will be to create your choice of two of the following to bring about an effective campus activism campaign. In addition, a
rubric has been established in order to guide you in how you and your group will be evaluated.

Choose from two of the media choices listed below.
  • Poster to display at various locations throughout campus
  • PSA (public service announcement) video
  • Brochure to hand out in the quad during “Student Club and Organization Day”
  • Creation of a Gay-Straight Alliance on your campus
  • Campus participation in one of these listed national events
